Where to fish it?
- Off rocks
- Shallow water
- Near stumps
- Hard bottom banks with laydowns
When to fish it?
- Weather: Windy and cloudy conditions are ideal. Don’t bother if it’s a warm, calm sunny day. Low light, so early morning and late evening have some success
- Water Temperature: Warm water works best, so early spring and late fall/autumn. Bass being cold-blooded don’t do too much during the cold and are not able to chase the crankbait.
- Fish Depth: The bass can’t be too deep, ie 20 feet / 6.10 m because it’s possible but difficult to get the lure down that deep. A depth of around 15 feet / 4.57 m is ideal. Crank bait should bounce off the bottom.
How to fish it?
- “Square-bill” are great for bouncing off objects in the water, such as rocks, stumps or docks. The bait bashing against obstacles usually triggers the bass to bite. This action on the cover is what separates square bills from round bills
- Designed for shallow water (6 ft / 1.83 m. or less) and meant to be fishing in and around cover, the square bill makes an excellent search bait. Look to fish in areas with lots of cover, stumps, rocks or docks, working to bounce the bait off of the cover.
- While the square bill is a versatile bait that can catch fish year-round, Spring and Fall are the primary seasons of usage as fish tend to be more concentrated in the shallow
